Letter of Intent is signed 1-year agreement between student-athlete & college, where student-athlete agrees to attend in exchange for financial aid.
The NCAA Eligibility-Center manages the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program & the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) provides oversight.
NLI program includes more than 600 Division I & II participating institutions.
NLI is a voluntary program for both institutions & student-athletes. No prospective student-athlete or parent is required to sign the National Letter of Intent, & no institution is required to join the program.
Letter does NOT guarantee playing time or position on team.
Letter is binding even if coach leaves institution. Letter signed with institution, not with specific coach.
When student-athlete signs letter, recruiting ban goes into effect & all participating institutions must stop recruiting. Student-athlete must notify college programs that letter has been signed.
Division III, NAIA, & JUCO programs don’t participate in program.
Non-scholarship players don’t sign National Letter of Intent.
