At beginning of junior year, student-athlete & family should create potential college list.
Primary factors for choosing college baseball program are quality education & opportunity for playing time.
Only elite players receive full scholarships & have choice of top programs.
Most receive 10%-50% of full tuition & must aggressively pursue other financial-aid and scholarships during college selection process.
Student-athlete should NOT focus only on Division I programs with large numbers of recruits. Focus on opportunities at lower divisions with scholarships available.
Be persistent & pro-active while following the steps outlined below:
Asses Baseball-Skills to Determine Appropriate Level of Play
Student-athletes & families must have realistic expectations of appropriate college program based on athletic & academic ability.
Schedule evaluation w/ TheBBR Professional-Scouts to determine appropriate level for student-athlete.

Ask college coaches who have seen student-athlete play if program has any interest. Most college coaches will give honest answer.

Talk to players (starters & non-starters).
Schedule unofficial visit to see campus & meet coaching staff.
4-Year College vs. Junior College (JUCO) Baseball
When comparing college baseball programs (not academic), student-athlete must choose program that provides best chance to play. It’s more beneficial to attend JUCO & play than sit at 4-year school.
Attending JUCO gives scouts, 4-year coaches, & student-athlete another year for development & time to determine what is best.
JUCO players are projectable like high school players, but have more experience.
Non-Baseball Criteria for Selecting School
Specific to student-athlete and family needs.
School is match for student-athlete’s academic ability.
School meets student-athlete’s non baseball needs & would be right choice without baseball.
Academic reputation, school faculty, & areas of study.
Geographic location & distance from student-athlete’s home.
School size & social life.
Housing
Tuition cost & amount of athletic / academic aid available.
Baseball Criteria for Selecting School
Level of competition is match for student-athlete’s athletic ability.
Scholarship availability.
Playing opportunities based on immediate & future recruiting needs at student-athlete’s position.
Program roster with 30-35 student-athletes offers opportunity for playing time & program roster with 40-50 players offers opportunity to sit.
Check roster for hometown & state information to see where program focuses recruiting.
Check physical profile for each position. If student-athlete doesn’t fit position profile, program won’t be interested.
Check player biographies (All-State, All-Star, previously-drafted).
Check ratio of upper to lower-classmen. Avoid program with few upper-classmen.
Check JUCO recruiting, which affects incoming student-athlete playing time.
Facilities (weight room, training room, locker room, & stadium).
